Laser Vision Correction

The past decade has brought about dynamic changes in our ability to reduce the need for dependence on glasses or contact lenses for nearsightedness and astigmatism. From the development of radial keratotomy (known as "RK") , which we performed in the Shore area about 15 years ago, to the initial laser corrective procedure known as Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), to the newest customized LASIK and EPILASIK procedures of today, we have had many happy patients who no longer wear glasses or wear only a very mild prescription part time.
Now, of course, we routinely perform LASIK (Laser ASsisted In-situ Keratomileusis) and Epilasik (similar to Lasik but without needing to replace a flap of cornea) which are available for many patients who could not be corrected by other methods. This includes those more highly nearsighted patients who, until recently, had to depend upon glasses or contact lenses. LASIK and EPILASIK in the twenty-first century are applicable for not only many nearsighted patients but also for many farsighted patients and even for those with significant levels of astigmatism. Most exciting is the new CustomVueâ treatment which measures not only the standard refractive errors above but also measures and corrects other types of aberrations in the eye. This technique is highly customized for each individual eye and is, in many cases, allowing for better vision (uncorrected) than could even be achieved with glasses or contacts
